Canucks Agree to Terms with Marcus Pettersson

On Wednesday night the Vancouver Canucks announced that they agreed to terms with Defenceman Marcus Pettersson. The contract details are 6 years at 5.5 million dollars. over 49 games this season Marcus Pettersson has 3 goals and 15 assists for 18 points. in the 2 games with Vancouver so far, he has looked great and has shown to be a solid second pair shutdown defenceman. he has a 0 +/- through those two games and has been averaging 24:30 minutes a night. He passes the eye test and has shown to be very smart in his own zone which is something the Canucks needed in their second pair. with the cap going up second pair defenceman’s prices should be going up. Hronek would be a good example making 7.25 million dollars for being a top tier second pair guy. So, for the Canucks to lock Pettersson down for that price creates a situation where if his play drops, he is still movable with the cap going up the next few seasons. More importantly if he turns out to have more in the tank and starts to play better it could look like an absolute steal if it already isn’t. Overall, I believe the Canucks have made an absolute great move locking up Pettersson to not only this price but this term as he will only be 34 when the deal expires meaning he could still be reliable at that age even if it isn’t totally up to the contract standards. W Alvin and hopefully they can look to lock up Boeser next.
