The Canucks faced off against the San Jose Sharks in a Thursday night match up. It’s their third game without Quinn Hughes in the lineup so the Canucks look to prove that they cam handle themselves without him. The play went through both zones for a bit until Filip Chytil and Brock Boeser and Drew O’Conner had good chances none of them went in. D Petey got a shot of the draw, and the puck went back to their zone, but they got it out and went right back to the Sharks zone and applied the pressure. Of the Draw the puck went past Hronek, but he swung it right back to Hoglander who brought it in that play ended with a shot by Hronek. The Canucks cycled the puck for a bit until the Sharks got it out that almost turned into a 3 on 1. The Canucks got it back and Boeser set up Chytil for a nice chance, but he missed the pass. D Petey would fire on for a whistle. The Canucks would cycle for a bit until they got caught lacking as Will Smith came in on a breakaway that would be stopped by Demko. The Sharks would come back with a chance that wouldn’t go in. the Canucks would come back with Nils Hoglander leading the rush and would see some close chances, but none would go in. After the Canucks got caught offside the Sharks would ice the puck. Off the draw Garland would make a nice hit. The puck would travel in between zones until Chytil would be up ended and the Canucks would go to the powerplay. Off the draw the puck would cycle to Pettersson for a quick shot the Sharks would get it out. the Canucks get the puck back in and cycle around until a Hronek shot that would miss the net. The get it back after some battles and cycle it until Hronek would hit the post. They would keep the puck in as the powerplay ends. The sharks would end up taking it from the tired powerplay players and take it down for a shot that was covered. The Canucks would move the puck out and get a shot attempt and the Sharks would ice it. Off the draw the Canucks would leave the zone and come back lose the puck and the Sharks iced it again. Play would go back and forth until the Sharks would get it in the zone and get a nice shot that would be stopped by Demko. After a quick icing by Vancouver and a quick whistle of a out of play shot. The Canucks would get the puck out and Coner Garland would get rocked. There would be a offside whistle and a quick icing but the Canucks would get a chance after O’Conner would have the puck on a string and give it to Boeser who would set up for a shot. After a hand pass called the Canucks would battle around for a bit but the Sharks would get it out. The play would go back and forth until Toffoli would get a shot from the slot off that would be steered away by Demko. With 43.8 seconds to go Mario Ferraro would crosscheck Drew O’Conner to send the Canucks to their second cross period powerplay in 2 games. The Canucks would get a quick shot that would go out of play. After the draw the Sharks would get it down to the Canucks zone and there wouldn’t be anytime to set up and the period would end at 0-0. I liked the start for the Canucks, but they did slow down and although the Sharks didn’t have many high danger chances the Canucks didn’t get many chances at all so the Sharks looked better in the later stages of the period. If the Canucks come out with high energy and shot more in the second, they will take the lead.

The Canucks continued their power play but couldn't get a shot off before it expired. Joshua had a chance in front but missed, and the Sharks responded with a shot that Demko stopped. Blueger tested Vanecek twice, both denied. After some slight pressure from Vancouver, the Sharks countered with a few shots from the point, but the Canucks regained control. A zone exit by San Jose was quickly stolen by O’Conner, leading to a great passing play that ended with Vanecek stopping O’Conner. The Sharks came back with strong chances, but Demko held firm before the puck was battled in the neutral zone until it went out of play. Off the center draw, the puck nearly got iced, and the Canucks applied pressure until the Sharks cleared. Vancouver got possession but iced it right after. A quick shot off the next faceoff led to a whistle and a TV timeout. The Sharks pushed again, but the Canucks shut it down and sent the puck back into their zone. After another clear, Garland was taken down by Celebrini, and Walman followed up with a second hit, sending him to the box for Vancouver’s third power play. The Canucks finally managed to get shots off, but Vanecek stopped them all. Myers held the zone and fired one out of play. Off the draw, Vancouver moved the puck well to create space, setting up Hronek for a shot that was stopped. Another attempt was blocked, and the power play ended. A Sharks clear sent the puck into Vancouver’s zone, where they were hemmed in for a bit, but the Chytil line changed the momentum with strong pressure. A clear led to another breakaway for Smith, but Demko shut him down. Both teams traded rushes as the game’s pace picked up until a Sharks icing. Walman leveled Garland, who went to the bench holding his upper half. The Sharks iced the puck again before D Petey got a rush that was stopped. More entries were exchanged until Demko covered a rolling puck. Soucy set up Blueger for a tip that went wide. With no whistles for a stretch, both teams created quality entries, and the Sharks set up in Vancouver’s zone, generating great chances, including one for Celebrini that he couldn't steer on goal. Chytil countered with a shot that gave Vanecek trouble before he covered. Off the next draw, O’Conner took a roughing penalty, sending the Sharks to their first power play. They didn’t get much time to set up, and the period ended 0-0. Vancouver had a similar period, shooting more but still struggling to finish. They should have the lead by now, but as long as they close the game strong in the third, it should be okay.

The Canucks were able to kill off the Sharks powerplay thanks to a nice glove save by Demko. Later in the period the Sharks ice the puck. Off the draw the Canucks throw pressure on the Sharks and Pettersson sets up Hoglander for a one tee that blocked and iced. Off the draw the Canucks keep the pressure up for a bit of time until the Sharks get it out and get some zone time but its stopped and the Canucks come down. They cycle for a bit until Hronek’s shot is blocked and the Sharks come down on a 3 on 1 that is stopped by Demko. Play continues until Macklin Celebrini send the puck over the glass for a penalty. The Canucks Powerplay starts with them having to regain the zone which they struggle to do for a minute and when they get it they lose it and let up a shot that’s steered away from Demko. The second unit would gain entry and lose it but would come right back and as Suter gets in to set up, he would spin put one on goal that would be tipped in right as the powerplay was ending by Joshua for his the of the season giving the Canucks a 1-0 lead on the powerplay almost halfway in the third. The Sharks would put on the pressure, and it would end with a beautiful save with the left pad by Demko. The Canucks would get the puck down and set up for it to be broken up by the Sharks, but the puck would go out of play. The Sharks would maintain puck control until a handpass would stop play. The Sharks battle for the puck as the Canucks keep it in the corners then ice it. The Canucks would ice it immediately of the draw. Canucks would get it out and get a change, but the Sharks would come back and get some chance and hold the zone. The Canucks would get it out, but the Sharks come right back in and set up until Demko covers the puck. Pay goes back and forth until the Canucks ice the puck. Another quick whistle on the play as Demko cover a puck that comes to him. Canucks get the puck down, but it’s brought back, and Nils Aman makes a solid check on Pu. The Canucks would ice it after. Off the draw the Sharks would do a set play setting up Toffoli for a good chance that’s stopped by Demko. Off the draw Macklin Celebrini would draw a hooking penalty on Filip Chytil. They would set up on the powerplay get a god chance early that’s turned aside. They keep control and Toffoli gets a one-tee that’s stopped by Demko. Canucks would get the puck out right away off the draw. The Sharks would get back in and set up and cycle for a bit and get a chance that tipped away by Puis Suter. Canucks win the draw, but the sharks get it back and get a shot on goal. The Canucks clear it of the shot, but the Sharks get it right down and Demko cover a rolling puck. Sharks set up and get a shot that causes chaos in front and get it out and the sharks get back in and after a turnover Toffoli get three chances in front buries the last on for his th of the year to tie the game late. Play gets fast and goes back and forth as the third period ends in a 1-1 tie and goes to overtime. Better period by the Canucks but that last second ruined it for them. Hopefully they turn around their overtime luck.

Overtime starts with everyone falling and the Canucks and Sharks get chances with O’Conner drawing a penalty shot. O’Conner comes in with half speed on the left side and fires it home for the win for the Canucks and control of the the second wildcard spot. Overall not the best game for the Canucks but 2 points is 2 points.
